The Lions are part of the South African Rugby Union and they were founded in 1996. Between 1998 and 2006, they were known as the Cats and they compete in the Super Rugby competition. They are located in Johannesburg and play their home matches at Ellis Park. They are coached by John Mitchell and their captain is Doppies La Grange. The Lions home rugby shirt for the 2011 Super 15 competition is manufactured by Gilbert. This shirt has a red base colour with four white horizontal designs that go across the main body. The sleeves are mostly white with a silver trim and the collar has both black and white detail. The Gilbert logo is on the right chest and the Lions badge sits on the left chest. The MTN sponsor is on the middle of the shirt.
